Located in Troy, Ohio, Stillwater Machining has been part of our company for several years now, but the shop itself has a much longer history. Since 1958, to be exact. That legacy shows up every day in the welding and machining work the team delivers. Here’s a closer look at our ReNEW Stillwater location and the role it plays in our nationwide network.
When Stillwater Machining was founded almost 70 years ago, it began as a small operation out of a garage like so many shops of the era. But it grew quickly, building a strong presence in the tool and die industry across the Dayton, Ohio region and Miami County. After many years of growth and movement, the company eventually settled in a large facility in Troy, Ohio, where it remains today.
Stillwater joined the ReNEW Platform in 2024, and we’re proud to help continue the shop’s long-standing legacy.
The ReNEW Manufacturing Solutions network offers a comprehensive set of capabilities across our shops, and Stillwater is a critical part of that mix. The Troy team focuses primarily on welding and precision CNC machining, supported by certified welders on staff and a broad range of equipment.
On the machining side, Stillwater provides both milling and turning, with a particular strength in large milling, as General Manager Cory Smith explains:
“We machine things as small as a computer mouse or as large as a 10,000-pound fabrication,” Smith said. “We’ve got a broad range of equipment. And we probably have some of the largest boring mill equipment in the area.”
That versatility in part size and equipment helps the shop support a range of industries. Stillwater serves customers in the automotive, telecom, and oil and gas industries, among others. They are ISO 9001 and AS9100-certified for aerospace manufacturing, demonstrating their disciplined approach to quality.
As general manager, Cory Smith oversees operations across the shop, from sales to production to quality. In total, the facility has 54 employees.
Cory’s career path shapes his leadership approach at Stillwater. He began his career at an OEM that built its own machines, starting as an industrial engineer and ultimately moving up to plant manager. After another management position elsewhere, he arrived at Stillwater shortly before they became part of the ReNEW network. He sees his varied experience over his career as a major strength.
“I’ve done a little bit of everything within manufacturing, from running machines to assembly work to purchasing, engineering, programming, and beyond,” he said. “And then I’ve worked with business planning, personnel management, and more.”
That hands-on background informs a leadership style built around support and accountability.
“I try to bring a team-focused approach and always get people involved,” he said. “Servant leadership is my goal. I want to give people the tools to be successful, and make their job as easy as possible.”
Stillwater is an active part of how ReNEW supports projects across the network, and Cory sees even more room to deepen that coordination. As collaboration between locations continues to grow, customers benefit from better capacity coverage and our ability to match each job with the best-fit capabilities across all shops.
Cory believes Stillwater is a natural fit in the ReNEW network because the shop has built its name on American-made quality for decades. And that expectation hasn’t changed.
“We’ve been in business 68 years and we still provide quality products to our customers every day,” he said. “We haven’t had a customer SCAR in the last two years. Customers know they’ll get a good product for a good value.”
